A working one at that

My final piece, Im happy with how it came out. I feel that the composition is right, the colour scheme and medium work well and the execution is to a high enough level so that i’m happy. I feel that it communicates the message I was trying to give effeciently enough for those who first look at it to understand the ideas behind.

My first atempt at a final draft. The ink came out great and the paper I used was perfect. But the composition just wasnt quite right so I decided to try again.

I thought that I needed to get back to basics, and get back to I. So heres the thing. What if I used all the letterpress techniques Ive learnt but this time in the shape of a letter I?

My first attempts. I tried a negative but found that it didnt really work aswell as the composition wasnt an immediate impact, however reversing this made a much better piece.

I next decided that I needed to add some more stuff to the piece. I did this using the letter of Individual. This helps the viewer to understand teh piece. I tried to create my own uniform type so that there would be some difference between it and the highlighted I however when using it it proved to be difficult to handle and this meant a comprimise in quaility. So I went back to useing the premade type and found that the aesthetic nature was far more pleasing. However I need to find a way to really re-enforce the idea of individual.

Set 2

I also tried vinyl :)

also I decided to use complimentary colours because this would provide the most contrast whilst enhancing the colours of the individual letters.

Set 1

So I decided to move the production method onto the letterpress. Since I was working with type. This method is perfect for my work because it allows me to produce a large quantitiy of work in a short amout of time but not comprimise quality. This is perfect because It means I can experiment with different compositions, media & colours etc.

I thin kthey came out great. Again I used the colours of the piece to communicate individual and the compositions were created to communicate a feeling of ‘community’ that is other people in this sense. The problem is, from an outsider point of view the individual isnt really that clear I need to push things forward and develop.

Also check out how the ink prints on some of the different papers, sweet!

set 2 coming soon.

I

How I didnt connect with this sooner I don’t know. Seriously I must be SLOW!

Anyway what works great about the letter I is that is everything that I need to communicate in simplistic forms the Individual.

It is the word which we use to descirbe ourselves and also it is the roman numeral for one. Perfect.

So I set about creating the images using typography.

I used more that just the I as I wanted to make sure I didnt miss a trick. The whole escapade was slightly sucesssful. The images work as composistions but either don’t represent or communicate the individual or are too obvious.

I tried picking out elements of pieces with a different colour to that of the majority of the pieces. I thought that since individualism is about creating a distinction then that would be one basic way of creating said distinction.

I have also had some thoughts about using the letter I. What about the size of the letter, the orientation, the composition, the font, the colour. Does this saying anything about a specific individual? I decided that I needed to be careful when producing these images because they have a tendancy to pick up undesired connotations.

The first step.

As always I had to use a process of deconstruction in order to achieve such an abstract brief. So I started with a dot. Its single unit. So what better way to represent an individual? Problem is without the context of other objects, its just a dot. Which made me think about how we are in society, without the context of other people we cannot be individuals, bit of a paradox really?

Anyway from here I moved on to lines since this seemed to be the next logical step. The great thing about a line is that it is also a singular unit but it can be manipulated, shaped and formed, scribing specific values and characteristics to it.

After creating nearly fifty odd images using lines and dots I realised something. Graphic design is just as much about communicating as it is about aesthetics. These pictures, they don’t really communicate an indiviual. Even if they do, they only communicate the wrong kind of individual, a specific one that is. Heres a selection.

Anyway In this set I used colours, positioning and other elements to imply the sense of the individual. So you can see the initial problems that arise. Without prior knowlegde as to what the piece is called would you really be able to tell what the pieces were about? Also by placing a red dot, on the other side of the page to that of a group of black dots we unfortunetly create a loner, separate from the crowd. Yes an individual, but a specific one.

Big problem, I hit a bit of wall for a few weeks here and found it very difficult to move past this.

However! I soon got through the mental block and discovered what a super way (I think at least) of communicating the Individual.

Also I would like to take the opportunity to apologise for the quality of the images taken. I apparently need a lot more practice with my camera, a summer project maybe?

Ego/Individual

I first decided that I wanted to do a brief that was based around a social issue. Since there are more social issues than you can count of your fingers, I thought it might a good idea to start by picking one. Makes things a lot easier.

The ego is something which is often use to describe a persons self esteem, or rather lack of self esteem. In a sense this use is partly correct, and it certainly has been in use for some time. However I did some research into the medical/psychological definition of ego and I discovered something very interesting.

Freud in his lifetime developed many psychological theories, one in particular was the mind and its mental characteristics.

This started with the ID; a hedonistic, pleasure seeking part of the brain which desire nothing more than to please itself, unconscious and primal.

However we can’t live as human beings relying solely on our pleasure seeking instincts (those that do tend to expire more soon than not) so the ego the develops and forms a bond with reality. Mediating the unconsious with the consious.

Unfortunately this is not the only development to occur in our lives. Observing the world around us teaches that our ID must be restrained as what it desires just wont float with the rest of society, so the super ego develops. This is effectly the over critical father figure who constantly questions and discourages the individual.

The ego then becomes the mediator between the two polarised mental attributes. It seeks to furfil the ID’s desires but also to please the super ego. So in essence it becomes the majority of who we are in the consious. Therefore it can be said that in actual fact the ego is the individual.

This concept is crucial as it is what I would be using throughout my own work development. I have also made the decission to use the generic sense of the individual rather than the specific use. The problem with using a specific individual is that there are a million different types. For example, the loner or the chav etc. this would take for ever to explore so instead I explored the generic, common meaning of individual.

Right then time to update!

Ok, it’s the end of the self directed brief and I thought it was high time that I update you all on the progress I have made. Enjoy!
